It’s time to halt the hate!
60-year-old Ghulam Ahmed was a Muslim resident of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, India. On 2 May 2017, when he went to the fields near his house, he was severely assaulted allegedly by members of a hardline Hindu group, ‘Hindu Yuva Vahini’. A fatally wounded Ahmad called his sons for help. They rushed to the scene but were unable to save their father. He died on the way to the hospital.
Following the attack on Ahmed, the perpetrators went to his house and intimidated, assaulted, and sexually harassed three women from Ahmed’s family.
It has now been over a year since Ghulam Ahmed was killed in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. His family believes that he was killed simply for being a Muslim. They have faced intimidation, harassment and threats. However, they continue to fight for justice. Currently, Ahmed’s case is being heard in a local court. The family continues to struggle to make ends meet and have received no compensation from the government.
Ahmed’s killing is one of the many alleged hate crimes taking place in India. Hundreds of victims of alleged hate crimes face hurdles in accessing justice.
