Progress For Transgender Rights in India!

Last August, the government introduced a highly flawed bill on transgender rights in Parliament. The bill contains several problematic assumptions about the transgender persons, which shows that the government did not consult the transgender community on a law that would affect their lives. The Supreme Court has provided clear guidance for authorities to design policies and take steps to recognize transgender persons as equal citizens.
The bill was referred to a parliamentary committee which invited suggestions from the public and civil society organisations. Amnesty International India made a detailed submission on the Bill. On 21 July 2017, the committee made a list of recommendations for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, which have adopted several points submitted by Amnesty International India.
However, we still have a long a way to go – the recommendations have yet to be implemented. Join our campaign listed below to demand that transgender rights are human rights!
