The Cost of Coal

Coal mining, the first step in the dirty lifecycle of coal, can have devastating effects on land, water and air, affecting health and livelihoods and key human rights. Local people are often excluded from economic benefits of coal mining. In many cases in India, corrupt and irresponsible mining companies operate without providing key information to communities. Central and state governments have failed to provide effective ways to hold companies accountable for their actions. was set up with the support of three organisations – mines, minerals & PEOPLE, Greenpeace India and Amnesty International India – to map the true impact of coal mining in India on people’s lives and habitats. It is intended to provide information – from media stories, ground reports and first-hand testimonies – of the real cost of coal mining.

Reports on the site are uploaded after they are verified and moderated for veracity sources of information on the site are an aggregation of citizen reports, media stories and documents in the public domain while also seeking responses from companies and government officials as far as possible. mines, minerals & PEOPLE is an alliance of more than 140 grassroots groups and 20 support organisations across 16 states in India. It is an alliance of individuals, institutions and communities concerned about and affected by mining, formed to combat its destructive nature. mmP supports local struggles, provides legal and media advocacy, conducts research and fact-finding missions, develops campaign strategies, networks with national and international organisations, and provides technical and scientific expertise.
