Cinema for Human Rights

Applications are now open for Amnesty India’s Film Festival 2018.

Amnesty India’s Film Festival recognizes that cinema is a powerful medium for highlighting human rights violations in India.  It seeks to shine a light on stories of courage and perseverance in the face of injustice, and to encourage individuals to stand together to achieve human rights for all.

Indians for Amnesty International Trust is pleased to announce the opening of submissions for the first edition of its annual film festival “Cinema for Human Rights”, which will take place in October 2018. We are looking for films that touch on one or several human rights issues that are connected to our areas of work. This includes freedom of expression, women’s rights, gender identity and sexual orientation, discrimination, communal violence, human rights defenders, whistleblowers and impunity, amongst other issues. The themes mentioned are not exhaustive. Films centered on other human rights issues are equally welcome for submission.

Cinema for Human Rights,  is a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their talent and voice their opinions on human rights violations and economic, social and cultural issues in India.

Key Guidelines

  • Human rights issues should be at the center of the narrative.
  • Due weightage will be given to both the human rights content and cinematic brilliance of the films.
  • Entries are open for films made in any regional language; however, they must have English subtitles.
  • All filmmakers whose films have been officially selected will be notified 2 weeks prior to the festival.
  • All submissions should only be made through the submission link provided below.
  • All films should be previously unscreened and unreleased.
  • All submissions should be accompanied with a biography of the filmmaker of not more than 150 words.

By sending your film you confirm that there are no copyright infringements on your behalf. The organization takes no responsibility in this matter. Resolving any such disputes or objections raised by an individual, group of individuals or organization, will be the applicant’s responsibility.

Deadline:  All movies should reach us on or before 12 p.m., 15 September 2018.

Eligibility Regulations:

  1. All films / documentaries shot on film or Video (Analog / Digital format) between January 2016 to November 2018 within a running duration of 30 seconds to 15 minutes are eligible for the festival.
  2. Entries of all films / documentaries (hereafter referred to as ‘Entry’ or ‘Entries’) shall be accepted only in DVD/BLURAY format. After nomination please send 2 BLURAY without watermark and any advertisement.
  3. If the language of the Entry is other than English, it must be dubbed or sub-titled in English.
  4. Entries may be entered by any organization, agency, individual producer or director or group.
  5. Selection of Entries for AIFF 2018 will be done by a jury whose decision will be final. However, AIFF 2018 reserves the right to reject any Entry that is likely to adversely impact the rights and reputations of others, national security, public order, or public health or morals, and/or is not in line with internal organizational policies.
  6. A complete screening schedule of the selected Entries shall be put up on the AIFF 2018 website tentatively on September 21, 2018.
  7. Transportation and insurance costs of DVDs/BLURAYs/DCP’s, related documents, photographs and publicity materials from the country of origin to the AIIF 2018 Office shall be borne by the applicant.
  8. AIFF 2018 reserves the right to use all photographs and publicity materials received along with the entry and the same will not be returned to the applicants.
  9. Censorship will not be applicable to any entries submitted for the festival.
  10. AIFF 2018 reserves the right to screen the entries in different cities of India on a non-commercial basis.
  11. AIFF reserves the right to exhibit excerpts from any Entries submitted for the festival in any television network or internet platform or related media during the festival period for promotional or publicity purposes.
  12. Entry forms with incorrect, inadequate, illegible or ambiguous particulars will not be considered.
  13. Entries submitted for selection will be considered as final and no changes will be entertained post submission. It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to submit entries without any physical or qualitative defects.
  14. Awards and certificate will be awarded to the director (s) or producer(s) of the entries.
  15. All shortlisted entries will receive a certificate.
  16. There is no limit for the number of submissions per applicant, but each submission must be accompanies by a separate entry form.
  17. Entries once selected and submitted for the final screening will not be allowed to be withdrawn under any circumstances, until the Festival is over.
  18. No applicant or entry will be either discriminated against or favoured on the basis of their nationality, race, ethnicity, class, caste, religion, belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, language, education or other status. Every content, every form and every technique will be admitted with no censorship of any kind.
  19. Entries that are submitted must be the applicant’s original work and shall not infringe on any copyrights or any other rights of any third parties. All applicants hereby declare that their entries are their original work and do not contain any content that infringes any Copyrights.
  20. Applicants hereby declare that they have obtained all required permissions from appropriate people regarding music, sound and/ or images presented in their Entries for which they do not possess Copyrights. By entering the Festival, the applicants agree that Indians for Amnesty International Trust will not be held liable for any copyright infringements perpetrated by them. If any disputes are raised by any individual or organization, the applicant will be the only one responsible for infringements, if any.
  21. All contestants undertake that no part of the entry violates any law(s) of India and that Indians for Amnesty International Trust is indemnified from any legal liability arising out of its exhibition.
  22. All legal disputes will be solely subject to the jurisdiction of the Karnataka High Court.
  23. AIFF 2018 reserves the right to not screen any entry without assigning any reason.
