Aakar Patel joined Amnesty International India in 2015.

A long-time journalist, Aakar is a writer and syndicated columnist based in Bangalore. Why I Write, Patel’s book translating Saadat Hasan Manto’s non-fiction from Urdu to English was published in 2014. He has also translated the writing of India’s prime minister Narendra Modi from Gujarati. He is a former newspaper editor and has worked at various publications across India, most recently with the Gujarati daily Divya Bhaskar in Ahmedabad. He was a member of a three man team, along with Dileep Padgaonkar and BG Verghese, sent by the Editors Guild of India to examine media bias during the Gujarat riots of 2002. The Guild published a volume, ‘Ordeal by fire in the killing fields of Gujarat’, based on the team’s report.
