Amnesty International India fights for every person’s right to basic human rights everywhere. AI India tries to pursue the state to take on its responsibility in the realm of protecting human rights as has been enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
We are an independent, non-partisan, autonomous human rights organization. We do not support or oppose any particular government, political system, religious creed or the views of those individuals or groups whose human rights we work to protect.
How AI India Works? AI India employs a variety of methods to carry forward the agenda of human rights promotion and protection. Prominent among them are:
Campaigns and Public Action : Campaigns are the hallmark of AI methodology, including AI India. AI India has organized a number of campaigns on various themes such as Stop Violence Against Women, Abolish Death Penalty, Control Arms, and so on, all of which convey the message of fostering human rights. With the help of
Urgent Action Network, AI India tries to provide quick and effective response to situations of urgency involving prisoners, detainees, and other threatened individuals. The purpose of Urgent Actions is to rapidly produce an internationally coordinated mass protest, to stop or prevent serious human rights violations.
Human Rights Education, Training, and Capacity Building : Amnesty International believes that Human Rights Education (HRE) is a deliberate, participatory practice aimed at empowering individuals, groups and communities through fostering knowledge, skills and attitudes consistent with internationally recognized human rights principles. AI India engages with local and national civil society organizations in order to facilitate the spread of knowledge and information on the state of human rights in the country, as well as to strengthen their capacity to undertake the cause of human rights in a more resilient manner.
Advocacy : AI India advocates its support for human rights through building alliances and networks with key stakeholders, working strategically with the media, as well as lobbying to influence key decision-makers at the local, national, and international levels.
Research and Documentation : AI India has been profusely engaged in reporting the abuses of human rights in the country as well as in other parts of the world in as accurate and objective manner as possible. Additionally, AI India publishes its quarterly newsletter Adhikaar where it brings out the state of human rights in India as well as in other countries.
